Botticelli’s Primavera (“Spring”) is one of the most famous and richly symbolic paintings of the Renaissance.
The scene depicts a lush, flower-filled garden and represents a celebration of spring, love, and renewal.
From left to right, we can see Mercury clearing the clouds with his staff, symbolizing the presence reason and order. Beside him, the Three Graces are dancing and represent beauty, charm, and joy. Venus, the goddess of love, is shown in the centre of the panel overseeing harmony between the spiritual and the physical. To her right we see the Roman goddess Flora scattering flowers, embodying the fertility and rebirth of spring. The nymph Chloris is shown being captured by the wind goddess Zephyrus who will transform Chloris into Flora. Finally, flying above the scene, we find Cupid with his bow and arrow symbolising desire, erotic love and attraction.
Primavera captures the humanist spirit of the Renaissance — blending mythology, philosophy, and beauty in a single poetic vision. It’s both a celebration of nature and an allegory of love’s power to bring harmony to the world. The original tempera on panel painting is currently housed in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence.
